Review on socioeconomic and sustainability of oil palm plantations among rural communities in Malaysia

Abstract Malaysian oil palm plantations contributed 2.7% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2020 and became the world’s second largest producer after Indonesia. Unfortunately, expansion has always been linked to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, soil erosion. Despite negative environmental repercussions, there is no denying that rapid had beneficial social economic impacts. Therefore, this study, researchers aim review recent studies on socioeconomic impacts Malaysia for last decade (2012 – 2022). This study also identifies challenges faced by rural communities who are participated cultivation. Since a conceptual paper, secondary sources, such as research articles, government reports, published works, used study. We employed desktop method search academic papers reports from online databases. Most agreed land development enhances levels, especially among providing job opportunities, creating small businesses, reducing poverty, improving their livelihoods.
